Enviroschool wins National 2007 YHA Young Conservationist Junior Award
30th October 2007
On 18 October 2007 The Minister of Conservation Chris Carter presented the national 2007 YHA Young Conservationist Junior Award to the “Green Team” at Kimbolton School near Feilding.
The school's award-winning project focuses on dealing with invasive weeds in nearby Kimbolton Bush Reserve and growing native plants to return to the bush.
"This project is an excellent example of a school using the local environment to enhance students' learning and shows what can be achieved beyond the boundaries of the classroom,” Mr Carter said.
“The Green Team is doing excellent work for conservation and has great results to show for their efforts. By taking action they are helping to restore a special place the whole district can be proud of."
The YHA Young Conservationist Awards are sponsored by YHA New Zealand in partnership with the Department of Conservation. The awards recognise outstanding conservation initiatives by young New Zealanders.
This is the sixth year of YHA New Zealand's involvement in the Young Conservationist Awards. YHA Social Sustainability co-ordinator Jonathan Tunnell said the students showed an amazing degree of energy and commitment.
“They have also gained the support and participation of the wider community,” he said.
The Minister said it was a pleasure to make the award to the Green Team.
“Only by encouraging our young people and recognising their achievements will we ensure that protection of our environment will be sustained through the generations,” Mr Carter said.
The Green Team will receive a $1,000 grant to support their ongoing conservation work at Kimbolton Bush and a free YHA Youth Membership.
