Students from across the Wellington region worked together to mobilise their schools and the local community as they designed and painted this mural on Ohiro Road, Brooklyn. The process of engaging with the community on how to organise the project and design the mural began back in December 2009. The students worked with a couple of local artists to create a design brief that ultimately invited the public to submit their design for the mural. Once all of the designs were gathered the students worked with local residents, Wellington City Council and the local stream restoration group 'Friends of Owhiro Stream' to create the final design.
The mural was painted by approximately 35 students and local residents during the weekend of 27/28 March to celebrate the ReGeneration Action Festival.
The mural represents the responsibility we all hold in our hands for the built and the natural environment. It highlights Owhiro stream which links Brooklyn to the sea. The mural also acknowledges aspects of the local ecosytem that are regenerating such as the tuna and the return of the kaka in the suburb's skies.
The mural is a talking point for locals and commuters.
